On the remote Balabac island in Southern Palawan, Philippines, the indigenous Molbog people believe that unseen spirits residing within their land and seas possess immense wisdom and power that help guide and bless them. When Habiron P. Bacar, a community leader and coordinator for the Molbog Indigenous Community Conservation Area (ICCA), learned that a spiritual leader in his tribe had been having recurring dreams of spirits covered in blood, crying and begging – he knew exactly why. A destructive practice called tanbarking, where mangrove bark are removed to make commercial dyes in the colour of dark blood, was decimating the pristine mangrove forests on Balabac island, and the spirits are calling for help. Upset and angry, Habiron sought to right the wrong, braving death threats to end this illicit activity. Now the time has come for him to lead and unite his community in repairing the harm done, where they must work together to help restore the mangrove forests and protect the future of the next generation.
